EASY ACCESS to mental health supports for survivors... "I want to see more mental health resources in schools beyond assigning school counselors. In my experiences, school counselors handled a variety of issues. They dealt with disciplinary issues, academic planning to help students achieve academic goals and provided short-term guidance counseling to students who needed help managing emotions and interpersonal skills. School counselors have heavy caseloads; a number of schools have one counselor for the entire school population. Personally, I didn’t really have a relationship with my school counselor to where I felt comfortable enough to talk to them. Grief and trauma expert resources must be allocated to schools after a shooting to help survivors manage their mental health."
